The bidet is so commonplace in bathrooms throughout Europe and Asia that no one bats an eyelash when they see one. In the U.S., though, it’s not the norm to come across the bottom-washing toilet fixture. It’s certainly proof of how cultural practices and preferences vary from nation to nation. But as it turns out, those of us on the bidet-less side of the globe may actually be missing out on some potential health benefits.
We probably should be using bidets in the U.S., Alan Kamrava, M.D., a California-based colorectal and general surgeon, tells SELF. “Since we’re not using them, we use things like wet wipes and toilet paper. It’s common for people to see a physician for discomfort in the anal area because essential oils have been wiped clean,” he says. Translation: We’re wiping our butts with rough paper, many times, harshly, until the area wipes totally clean, and we’re leaving irritation and discomfort behind. “People who use bidets are much less likely to have issues with rashes and discomfort and irritation,” Kamrava adds…
