Tips For Fixing Plumbing Problems On Your Own

July 26, 2013 by Shen

Many people think do-it-yourself plumbing is difficult. As long as you can find some accurate information to assist you in making repairs, it shouldn’t be a problem at all. This article contains a number of tips on plumbing that will help you on your way to finishing your project.

If you have pipes that sound as if they’re squeaking or hammering, it’s an easy fix. Anchoring exposed pipes will decrease the amount of noise your plumbing system makes. Get a professional to anchor any hidden pipes if you do not wish to do some work in your floors or walls by yourself.

Avoiding frozen pies is easy if you ensure no area of your house ever falls below freezing and that any pipes which are exposed to such temperatures are protected with insulation. If the temperature surrounding the pipes is anywhere below freezing, this can cause the pipes to freeze. At best, it can take time for them to thaw and for you to be able to have running water. However, they could burst, which would cause a huge mess and an extremely big repair bill.

Don’t pay a plumber midway through the job. It is customary to put down one-third to one-half of the total cost before the work is started, but do not pay in full until it is complete. It is a good thing to know the plumber did his job as he agreed to before he get’s all of his money.

Never reach into your garbage disposal with bare hands, even if there is a serious problem with it. Even when in the off position, garbage disposals are dangerous. Locate your garbage disposal manual, or do an Internet search for troubleshooting advice and a diagram that illustrates your model.

Cleaning your in-sink garbage disposal can extend its lifetime significantly. By regularly incorporating a routine using a combination of dish soap, lemon rinds, and even cherry pits, you can keep your disposal running smoothly and smelling as fresh as the day it was installed.

Set up a time when all plumbing work will be completed at one time. If a problem is minor, it can be wise to put off repair until you have more than one item to fix. This also gives you time to save up for the needed repairs. Most plumbers have an hourly rate and a flat rate for the trip: asking a plumber to fix multiple problems in one trip is cheaper than calling them more than once.

When replacing your shower head, spend the money on a high-quality model. It’s common to think it’s fine to buy the one that is the cheapest. Cheap shower heads have a tendency to break easily, so make sure you get what you pay for.

As was discussed at the beginning of the article, while plumbing can be an extremely difficult chore for anyone to complete, it becomes significantly easier if you have the right advice and information. Use the advice from this article, and you’ll be on your way to doing your own plumbing.
